INTRODUCTION

Leave No One Behind

On WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY we stand with the UN’s agenda to "leave no one behind,” we would like to use our voice to inform our community and beyond about the challenges faced by people on the spectrum and to bring more EQUALITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION in our global community and celebrate its diversity.

To reaffirm our commitment to the above cause, we here at Sound for Life want to leverage the knowledge and technology of our advanced tools and programs which help people with communication and behavioral challenges. These tools (Soundsory and Forbrain) help in reducing barriers and open opportunities for individuals with autism to learn better and be active members of their communities.

ABOUT SOUNDSORY®

Soundsory uses a multi-sensory approach which combines sound with movement to stimulate the vestibular and auditory systems simultaneously. This integrated method provides a unique approach to sensory processing, emotional regulation and cognitive skill development.

Soundsory Program Structure: The program is 30 minutes a day for 40 days. The program can be broken down into two parts:

25 minutes of Rhythmic Music Program

  • Specifically composed to emphasize rhythm and to activate body movement
  • Electronically processed music using a patented dynamic filter to create specific sound contrasts
  • Music is delivered both through air and bone conduction to deliver a unique stimulation to both the auditory and vestibular systems.
  • Music is rhythmic music, varies from: Bach, Hayden, Strauss, Marches, Children Songs, Gospel, Jazz, and Latin music
  • There are 9 tracks and an additional 2-3 tracks that are paired with exercises
  • Each song lasts long enough for the brain to get used to the rhythm but is short enough to avoid habitual processing.
  • Each day is organized so that specific tempos change several times in order to challenge the brain, which creates neuroplasticity.

5 minutes of Body Movement Exercises

  • From primitive reflexes to repetitive complex movement
  • Focuses on body awareness and coordination
  • Specially designed to focus on: Somatic Movement, Balance and Spatial judgement, and Timing and Rhythm Control.

BENEFITS OF SOUNDSORY

Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder

The spectrum of Autism is very broad as are the symptoms and severity of symptoms. Some of the main challenges are social skills, communication, motor skills, and sensory processing development. What that may look like is an individual who does not always respond when their name is called, avoids eye contact, prefers to play or be alone, does not share interest with others, has obsessive interests, does not point, does not imitate, does not pretend play, repeats words or phrases, has language delay, does not use language to communicate, might flap hands, rock their body, look at things spinning, might have unusual responses to sound, touch, taste, movement, sight, have delayed or difficulties with gross motor and fine motor skills etc.

Soundsory's home-based sound therapy program helps in improving the essential foundational skills like:

  • Coordination
  • Motor skills
  • Balance
  • Proprioception
  • Rhythm integration
  • Auditory and Sensory processing

These are core skills which result in better communication and cognitive skills.  Read the below section to understand the science behind the Soundsory program and how it helps in improving these foundational skills.

SCIENCE BEHIND SOUNDSORY

FIRST LET'S UNDERSTAND NEUROPLASTICITY

Till a few decades ago it was believed that the brain is a static organ. It was believed that after childhood, no new neurons grew and certain neural pathways became fixed. But after years of research we now know that new neural pathways can be formed and, when disease or damage occurs in one part of the brain, cortical maps can be redrawn to make up for the lost function. This ability of the brain to change is known as Neuroplasticity (also called brain plasticity). It is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life.

SOUNDSORY INHERITS ITS KNOWLEDGE FROM THE TOMATIS METHOD®

The Tomatis Method is built on the foundation of neuroplasticity is the most innovative and advanced neurosensory stimulation training program to improve brain function. Supported by a wealth of studies over a course of sixty years, the Tomatis Method is commonly used to improve motor skills as well as emotional and cognitive abilities.

EFFECTS OF SOUNDSORY ON AUDITORY AND VESTIBULAR SYSTEM

The interconnected actions of the auditory and vestibular systems have a major role to play in the coordination of movement and balance, which in turn impact brain function. The ear is not only an auditory organ which perceives sounds but also a motor organ which captures our movements and determines our balance, rhythm and coordination. The stimulation of the auditory system leads to better speech processing, and communication and the stimulation of the vestibular system leads to better balance, coordination, sense of rhythm, body schema, spatial navigation etc.

How does Soundsory stimulate the Auditory and Vestibular System?
  • Patented Dynamic Filter and altered music of Soundsory provides enhanced stimulation to the Vestibular and Auditory system leading to better balance, coordination, rhythm and auditory processing.
  • Bone Conduction Technology - Soundsory uses two different types of sound processing, both air and bone conduction, to stimulate the brain. These two systems emphasize different ways of sensory processing and complement each other.
